Meeting Report 6th April 2008
06 Apr 2008
Cornwall Solo Grass Track Club held the first of this year’s Championship Rounds on Sunday in wintery conditions at St Erme.
Those who braved the frequent snow and hail showers witnessed a competitive meeting in sometimes testing conditions. Whilst the number of competitors may have reduced as the meeting went on the quality of racing in the sometimes tricky conditions never diminished.
In the solo classes Charlie Saunders was the dominant force claiming winning all five rides on route to claiming the 500cc Solos, Experts and Open Classes. Plymouth Devils Speedway rider Ben Hopwood claimed the Restricted Licence Holders race along with a heat win and 3rd in the final of the 500cc class and 3rd in the Open final. Rod Melksham claimed 2nd in the 500cc and Experts Classes with Paul Derrick taking 2nd in the Open Final.
Derren Harris claimed the Pre 75’s ahead of Gerry Smith and Pete Randall. Tom Perry took the 250cc solo’s ahead of Lee Pitman and Richard Warry who also claimed the Invitation race. Wayne Barrett claimed the 350’s from Perry with Dan Berwick. Notable performances for local riders included Jason Prynne claiming 3rd in the Experts and Chesney King taking 2nds in the Restricted and Invitation classes. Rounding off the top three’s were Max Sanford in the Restricted Licence Holders and Keith Snelling in the Invitation Race.
The 1000cc Sidecars provided plenty of close action with Myles Simmons coming out on top. First up was the National Licence holders with the heats going to Alfie Pearn/Terry Pearn and Myles Simmons/Kevin Woodley. Simmons to the final ahead of Richard Thomas/Phil Stoneman with Neil Owen/Kevin Colborne 3rd on the Godden V Twin. Anthony Power/Lee Burrows took the Restricted Licence Holders after the Simon Heal/Wayne Richards outfit failed on the line.
The 1st Open served up 4 different race winners in the 6 heats with Owen/Colborne and Mark Warren/Mark Courtney taking two each with Simmons and Thomas taking one apiece. Simmons won the final ahead of Thomas with Owen in third. The 2nd Open was truncated after a number of outfits withdrew from the meeting leaving Simmons to take the final from Owen and Thomas.
