Report 04 Sep 2005

Cornwall Solo Grass Track club hosted the sixth and penultimate round of the Club Championships at St Erme on Sunday.

The Solo field was again closely matched with Wayne Barrett again getting the edge over the others to go through the day unbeaten in the 500cc, Experts and Solo Open classes. Barrett was helped by Adrian Rowe sliding of in the 500cc final whilst leading. Richard Knight travelled down from Bristol and 2nd in the Experts and Solo Open. Rowe recovered from the earlier fall to take 3rd in the Experts and Solo Open. Kevin Williams took 2nd claimed a second in the 500cc final and 4th in the Experts but was forced to retire from the Solo Open final with a fuel problem.

Paul Bray claimed both the Invitation and Restricted Licence Holders classes. Shaun Pascoe claimed 2nd in the Invitation final but suffered a heavy crash in the Cederic Caff Memorial race which ended his day. Steve Pearce on a 350cc machine took 3rd in the Invitation and 2nd in the Restricted finals but was unfortunate to suffer a puncture in the 350cc race. 3rd place in the Restricted final went to Gavin Horsburgh. Horsburgh claimed a win in the Karleen Caddy Memorial race which was cut short by an accident when an unsighted Jessie Lamb ran into an already fallen Andrew Cocker. The crash ended the day for both riders. Mike Bowden claimed the Cederic Caff Memorial Trophy ahead of Pearce and Ian Parsons in third. It was a shame that all the riders programmed did not support these races held in memory of two individuals who worked tirelessly for the club over the years.

A full field of 12 entries provided some of the best sidecar racing for the year. Jim Pearn/Paul Uglow claimed the Restricted Licence Holders ahead of Steven Palmer/Shaun Hoskin in 2nd and Tim Warren/Martin Sheppard in 3rd. Ric Mcauley/Phil Stoneman claimed both Open finals after Clive Stoneman suffered engine problems which ended his day after the First Open heat. Second place for Lee Hicks/Phil Collyer in the First Open final enabled them to keep there lead in the championship on 20 points ahead of Wayne Westaway/Mark Courtney, who took third in the final, and McAuley/Stoneman tied on 17 points. In the Second Open final Pearn/Uglow took 2nd ahead of Palmer/Hoskin.

In the Youths Bill Gribble claimed the Auto Cadets with a 5 ride maximum score. David Abraham took 2nd ahead of Daniel Stephens in 3rd. In the Cadets Gribble suffered his first defeat of the year when Nathan Stoneman, aboard a fresh machine scored his first class win of the year in leg 4. Gribble took the class win with Stoneman in second and Mcauley Whitfield third. The Juniors was won by Joshua Dingle ahead of Jake Quintrell with Lloyd Barrett in third and Danny Whitfield in fourth. The Inters class was won by Stefan Maunder ahead of Chesney King with James Charlesworth in third. Daniel James lost out on scoring points in 2nd leg after being unfortunate to collide with Lewis Leah who high sided in front of him. Leah was fifth after suffering bike problems in the third leg of the day.
